On October 29th, BuzzFeed published an article featuring Star Trek Discovery actor Anthony Rapp. In it, he claimed that Kevin Spacey made inappropriate sexual advances towards him at the age of 14. The reader is given many details as to what took place during the night in question, and after the mass outrage, Spacey took to Twitter to both apologize and come out as gay in the same Tweet.
Since then, the list of people coming forward about alleged sexual assault grows longer. Note that all of them are men who give the same answers women give when asked the question; why didn’t you say something earlier? They didn’t think anyone would believe them. They wanted to keep their careers and Kevin Spacey seemed to powerful of a force to take down. All it took was one brave man to speak out, and the rest felt comfortable to do so as well.
Eleven people. That’s how long the list is now. Those names include Anthony Rapp, Robert Cavazos, Tony Montana, Justin Dawes, Mark Ebenhoch, Harry Dreyfuss, a former production assistant on House Of Cards, and a few men who wish to remain anonymous.
Harry Dreyfuss, like Anthony Rapp, had an article published to BuzzFeed. I think BuzzFeed’s new line should be, “BuzzFeed. The most depressing place on earth.” Harry Dreyfuss, who is the son Oscar award winning actor Richard Dreyfuss, writes the following:
When I was an 18-year-old senior in high school, Kevin Spacey groped me.
It was 2008, and he was directing my father, Richard Dreyfuss, in a play called Complicit at the Old Vic in London. I’d come to visit for Christmas Break. It happened one night when the three of us were alone in Kevin’s apartment rehearsing my father’s lines. My father didn’t see, and I didn’t tell him about the incident for many years.
After a few minutes, he put his hand on my thigh. I finally became suspicious. I thought, Surely he can’t be coming on to me like this right in front of my dad. But his hand stayed there. So after a bit, I came up with what I thought was a brilliant safety tactic: I stood up and walked to the other side of the couch, and sat back down. Bulletproof. But without missing a beat, Kevin stood up too, and followed me. He sat just as close and immediately put his hand back on my thigh.
I was unable to process what was happening: My dad and I were pretending to be lovers in a play while Kevin Spacey was trying to seduce me and all the while in real life I was a hapless, straight virgin who just wanted to become a famous actor.
These are just snippets from the original article, the encounter actually get’s worse from here. Kevin Spacey, though he continuously uses “I was in the closet” or “I was drunk and can’t confirm” as excuses, it’s obvious that he can’t run away from the consequences. How long will it be before heavy fines and prison sentences come into question? Only time will tell, but what we do know is this; the world has seen the ugly side to Kevin Spacey, and we are done with him.
