Did you enjoy your Thanksgiving?
If you are like a sizeable portion of the American population, then the answer is probably, “Yes.” This time of the year is reserved for family, gifts, and thinking about what we ought to be grateful for in our lives. However, if you dare use the #thanksgiving hashtag on Twitter, the Southern Poverty Law Center has deemed you an alt-righter.
That’s right, the SPLC, a non-profit organization specializing in equal rights and social justice (notably, as they pertain to hate speech), has issued what they call a Hate Tracker, which “which identifies trending topics among a network of far-right in near-real time.”
The so-called "alt-right" recruits and promotes on Twitter. That's why we've launched a Hate Tracker, which identifies trending topics among a network of far-right in near-real time. https://t.co/mE2qISmvlT

This hate-tracker “detects trends in a community of far-right Twitter users identified and reviewed by analysts in the Southern Poverty Law Center’s Intelligence Project. These accounts represent a range of extremists – from the conspiratorial fringes of mainstream conservatism to outright white supremacists – who regularly use Twitter as a tool for media subversion, ideological indoctrination and propaganda dissemination. These users also participate in many conversations and topics that are popular among more ‘mainstream’ communities.”
As of Thanksgiving Day, the trending hashtags among “alt-right” Twitter accounts were documented as the following:
Evidently, #happythanksgiving, #maga, #thanksgiving, and #defendeurope are “alt-right” hashtags. Should such moderate expressions of political opinion be associated with the radical right wing ideologues? Perhaps, and hear me out, right-wingers and alt-righters are just people like everybody else.
