Nearly 1,100 migrants from Central America, mostly Honduras, Guatemala and El Salvador, descended on the Tijuana-San Diego border this week. They have demanded asylum in the United States. The group arrived by caravan and was supported throughout their journey by the nonprofit Pueblo Sin Fronteras (People Without Borders).

Caravans that make their way to the United States from gang-ridden nations south of Mexico are not unheard of. The one that arrived this week has attracted worldwide attention, however, mostly due to the fact that it’s one of the largest since Pueblo Sin Fronteras began its annual excursion through Mexico 15 years ago.

The group, traveled over 1,000 miles to the border region. They set off from Tapachula, Mexico’s southernmost city.

President Trump has blasted the caravan and called for Mexico to stop the migrants at the border.

“Mexico has the absolute power not to let these large “Caravans” of people enter their country. They must stop them at their Northern Border, which they can do because their border laws work, not allow them to pass through into our country, which has no effective border laws,” he stated on Twitter.

Migrants often claim to be attempting to find refuge in the United States to escape impoverished conditions in their native countries. However anger has brewed over one photo, in particular, that was captured at the border a few days ago.

In the picture, a woman who arrived in the caravan was caught holding a new iPhone 8 while demanding to be allowed into the United States.

This device was released in the fall of 2017 and it cost around $1,000.

The image outraged many due to the fact that there are American citizens who cannot afford a luxury like an iPhone 7. It also confirms what many in this country have long suspected; that many migrants are not fleeing harsh conditions to find a better life in the United States.

Many times those who cross over into the United States simply want to take advantage of the benefits they are promised once on American soil, such as free healthcare, public education, and automatic citizenship for children if they are born in the United States.

The woman snapping pictures with her iPhone 8 while demanding to enter the United States is undeniable proof of this.
