On March 28th, the Democratic National Committee (DNC) called for resignation letters from all staff members. DNC Chair Tom Perez has decided to overhaul the DNC after the stunning 2016 election loss. He stated, “What we’re trying to do is culture change. We’re repairing a plane at 20,000 feet. You can’t land the plane, shut it down, and close it until further notice.”
Since Obama assumed office in 2009, the Democrats have faced dramatic losses at every level of government. Other than Barack Obama’s successful reelection in 2012, Democrats have lost governorships in traditionally liberal states, and they’ve lost house and senate majorities in states where they previously had commanding leads. A graphic depiction below shows just how poorly the party has performed in the past decade, despite claiming to be the voice of the working class, the poor, and minorities.
The selection of DNC Chair Tom Perez was highly controversial and seen as a slap in the face to progressives and Bernie Sanders’ supporters. Perez was labor secretary under Barack Obama and was the preferred candidate of Obama. However, many within the Democrat party are unsatisfied with the choice and believe it is a step in the wrong direction.
According to NBC:
Party staff routinely see major turnover with a new boss and they had been alerted to expect such a move. However, the mass resignation letters will give Perez a chance to completely remake the DNC’s headquarters from scratch. Staffing had already reached unusual lows following a round of post-election layoffs in December.
Immediately after Perez’s selection as party chairman in late February, an adviser to outgoing DNC Interim Chair Donna Brazile, Leah Daughtry, asked every employee to submit a letter of resignation dated April 15, according to multiple sources familiar with the party’s internal workings.
A committee advising Perez on his transition is now interviewing staff and others as part of a top-to-bottom review process to decide not only who will stay and who will go, but how the party should be structured in the future.”
DNC Chair Tom Perez is the party’s third leader in the past year after Debbie Wasserman Schultz was forced to step down. It was revealed in a Wikileaks document dump that she actively helped Hillary Clinton win the nomination over Bernie Sanders. Later, Interim Chair Donna Brazile was identified in a Wikileaks dump as providing Hillary Clinton with debate questions on two occasions. Brazile was fired from CNN for this and later admitted her wrongdoing.
Perez’s “culture change” statements indicate that the party is struggling with multiple voting blocks, including generation Z and white working class voters. Many of these voters abandoned the party after it embraced subjects like black lives matter and amnesty, which turned out to have devastating consequences in the 2016 election.
